Description:

  • Workshops for organisations wanting to function more effectively in a culturally diverse society
  • Training which includes the following topics: recognising one’s own cultural perspectives, recognising possible cultural misunderstandings - a tool kit of skills for working in a diverse society. These are general skills that can be used in all situations where we feel we may have a problem in communication because however hard we work we cannot become expert in all languages and all cultures.
  • Facilitated discussion between people from different cultures who need to improve communication. Jane Schaverien is an experienced mediator and facilitator.

[NZ Office of Ethnic Affairs accredited trainer Jane Schaverien is a member of a panel of intercultural awareness and communication trainers, recommended by the to deliver its training packages in Intercultural Awareness and Communication and Ethnic Perspectives in Policy.]

I am based in Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington but work Aotearoa-NZ wide. Mentoring, supervision and consultation for specific problems can be provided by telephone and as an alternative to working face-to-face in Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington.

Services offered:

  • Education
  • Consultancy
  • Professional development
  • Mentoring and Supervision for people working with diversity issues

I take a general approach but also specialise in issues concerning ethnicity and facilitation for Deaf and Hearing communication.

I believe that there is no single right way. There is more ignorance and error than malice in our society although we tend to interpret mistakes as bad faith. It is possible and necessary to world peace that we respect alternative views and this is a skill that needs to be learned.

Workshop-course descriptions:

  • Each course is designed to suit the particular group
  • NZ Office of Ethnic Affairs: intercultural awareness and communication training (see OEA website)and Ethnic Perspectives in Policy for policy analysts

I work with:

  • Community groups
  • Government Departments
  • Educational institutions
  • Business
  • General public
  • Individuals and couples

Other information:
I evaluate my work using participant evaluation methods and Optional NZQA workplace assessment of participants' current cultural competence after training. I keep my knowledge current through reading, research, professional development and networking. The Office of Ethnic Affairs monitors my work. I am Jewish with a Māori partner and child. Charges are flexible and negotiated for each event.
